Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy FAQs

Pelvic floor physiotherapy is a specific type of treatment that focuses on the muscles, connective tissue, and nerves in the pelvis. The primary goal of this type of treatment is to address issues such as bladder control, pelvic pain, post-partum recovery, pelvic weakness, etc.

Pelvic floor physiotherapy can help with these conditions:

  • Urinary incontinence
  • Pelvic pain
  • Feeling of pressure or heaviness in the pelvic area
  • Painful sex
  • Recovery from pregnancy & post-partum
  • Weakened core
  • Rectus abdominis diastasis (gap)
  • Constipation
  • Tension in the pelvic floor muscles

Your physiotherapist will discuss your symptoms, medical history, lifestyle, and goals. They will perform an assessment, which includes examination of posture, breathing, movement patterns, core strength, and function of the pelvic floor. A treatment plan will then be developed according to your needs.

While it's not necessary to obtain a doctor's referral to schedule a consultation with a pelvic floor physiotherapist, some insurance plans may require a doctor's note prior to reimbursing your fees.

Internal exams may be recommended to properly assess your pelvic floor muscles. However, we will always obtain your consent prior to proceeding with an internal exam. You can still receive treatment if you do not want to have an internal exam performed.

You should wear comfortable clothing that allows easy movement during the examination and treatment.

Typically longer than follow-up visits, as there is time for a full evaluation and development of a treatment plan.
